4 Things You Need To Become an Emergency Medical Technician

If you want to work in the medical field, but don’t want to spend years in college, think about getting a job as an emergency medical technician (EMT). While the position can be stressful, it’s also rewarding. How many other jobs are there where you save lives?  Here are some of the skills you’ll need.

1. You’ll Need a High School Diploma

Unlike many positions in the medical field, you only need a high school diploma to work as an EMT. If you don’t have that piece of paper, take evening classes at your local library to earn a GED certificate and you’ll qualify.

2. You’ll need To Be Certified in CPR

If you want to be an EMT, you’ll have to be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, also known as CPR. After that, you’ll need to take additional training. You can enroll in cardiovascular life support training Seminole FL for the additional skills you’ll need.

3. You’ll Need Training

To qualify for this in-demand field, you’ll also need to find a state-approved EMT training program near you. You can find these courses at most vocational schools and community colleges in your area. The training will involve both classroom study as well as training in the field.

4. You’ll Need to Pass Two Exams

At the end of your training, you’ll have to pass two different exams. The first is a computer-based exam known as the cognitive exam that covers all the information you’ll need to know to be an EMT. Another test you’ll have to pass is called the psychomotor exam. It tests your ability to control bleeding and immobilize patients. You’ll have to demonstrate other skills as well, such as administering oxygen.

By accomplishing these four tasks, you’ll be able to work as an EMT, operating in an environment that may be stressful at times, but never boring and definitely rewarding.
